At first glance, a very innocent, floating aquatic creature. Its flowing tentacles are almost invisible. You could say it’s a nondescript creature that neither impresses nor frightens anyone. Yet it is one of the deadliest animals on our planet.
The Flecker’s tetrahedron is a species of sea jellyfish that you may also know as the “deadly tetrahedron” or “sea wasp”. It can be found from northern Australia, through New Guinea to Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. In general, jellyfish are not among the animals that are near life. On the surface, they are very magical creatures that have inhabited our planet for millions of years. We know they can cause painful rashes and blisters. But few people know that this species of sea jellyfish is one of the most dangerous sea creatures.
If you encounter the deadly quadrilateral and are really lucky, you could end up in critical condition in hospital. But most people don’t get to share their experience. A touch, even with a single stinging tentacle, can mean a quick death.
The Deadly Quad has one of the deadliest and fastest activating poisons in it. Almost instantaneous poisoning occurs in the epidermis (the uppermost layer of the skin). Its venom is hundreds of times stronger than that of a cobra and thousands of times stronger than that of a tarantula. And all thanks to its tentacles. The tentacles of this deadly jellyfish are thin and sticky. With just one single sting, they can release hundreds of millions of stinging cells. They harbour cardiotoxin, one of the most powerful poisons on the planet.
Quadruped toxins quickly attack the heart, central nervous system and skin cells. The sting is so painful that the affected person usually goes into shock immediately and drowns. If drowning does not occur, intense and severe muscle spasms will result in heart failure before the person manages to reach the shore. Immediate poisoning is also accompanied by nausea and swollen lymph nodes. There is no antidote yet. The beaches may be surrounded by first aid, but the poison is so strong and fast that help cannot arrive in time. Death usually comes within two minutes of the attack.
